After undergoing surgery to treat a stress fracture in his back, Cameron Green missed 15 months of Test cricket. He is now prepared to rejoin the Australian team, though, for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final against South Africa, which is scheduled to start on Wednesday, June 11.
Now that he has one less thing to worry about, Cameron Green is probably going to rejoin the club as a hitter only, which he is perfectly happy to do. According to ESPNCricinfo, Green stated, “The bright side of having four back injuries is that I’ve got four chances only to be a batter.”
“I thought I was constantly playing well at those times. You’re so much more at ease [with] only half a game to worry about, but I’ll always keep bowling. There are a lot more bowling-related tasks you must complete when batting and bowling in order to be healthy and prepared for play. Batting does suffer as a result. Therefore, simply hitting is pleasant.
Since he is solely used as a batter, Beau Webster can now take his place in the starting lineup, most likely at number six. After David Warner retired, Steven Smith agreed to open for a short while, allowing Green to bat at four. Cameron Green, meanwhile, is willing to play at three if necessary now that Smith is back at four.
In first-class cricket, he has only batted first once in that position, but he doesn’t care too much about it.
“You grow up through your whole career, you speak to anyone here, they’ve definitely batted in the top three or four throughout their whole junior career,” he stated.
“I batted three till you reach first-class cricket, just like everyone else. You’ve been hitting at three your entire life, so there are no problems at all.”
Ahead of the WTC final, the 26-year-old is also having a fantastic season playing county cricket for Gloucestershire, where he has hammered three hundreds and one fifty in nine innings. Cameron Green is appreciative of the chance to play in England.
“It’s certainly the best I’ve felt batting in England,” Cameron Green stated.
“It is quite useful to have the opportunity to visit and play some country cricket. I’m therefore the most prepared I’ve ever been. Speaking with a few county folks who have lived here for years, I believe it’s about understanding what the various conditions can offer and the various approaches to take. Some clichés include scoring square and defending straight. In Australia, it’s typically the exact reverse, with the goal being to hit the ground hard.
Since making his debut in 2020, Cameron Green has participated in 28 Test matches for Australia, amassing 1,377 runs at 36.23. He has also taken 35 wickets at 35.31 from his bowling.
