Steve Smith shows his eagerness to step in as Australia's opener after David Warner's retirement

With the great Steve Smith indicating his interest in opening for Usman Khawaja, a new possibility has emerged. Additionally, he said that the captain and head coach will have their last discussion on the selection dilemma shortly.

In Sydney, Australia and Pakistan are presently engaged in their third and final Test match. David Warner will be retiring from the longest format of the game after this, making his final Test appearance. The small-ish batsman has also said that he will not be participating in ODI cricket any longer, but he may return if needed for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. There’s a lot of discussion going on about potential Warner replacements in the Test arena.

Matt Renshaw, Cameron Bancroft, and Marcus Harris are the contenders for the opening spot. Additionally, a few analysts have suggested that all-around player Cameron Green should be added to the starting lineup. A few weeks prior, Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald said that Labuschagne, who has been a reliable No. 3 hitter for the world Test champions, would move up one slot to make room for Green in the middle order.

“To be honest, I’m glad to reach the summit. If it’s what they want to do, I’m pretty excited about it. Following Australia’s victory over Pakistan in the third Test match, Steve Smith told ABC Grandstand, “I’m sure the selectors and Ron [Andrew McDonald] and Patty [Cummins] will have a chat after this game but yeah, I’m certainly interested for sure.”

For Australia in 2023, Steve Smith has not been reliable.

Batting at No. 3 and No. 4, Steve Smith has impressive records. Smith has eight hundred at No. 3 with an average of 67.07. Following his descent to No. 4, the right-handed hitter amassed runs at a 61.46 average, including 19 centuries.

Steve Smith finished 2023 with an average of 42.22, which is extremely low when compared to his high standards. It is claimed that Smith is reportedly looking forward to a new challenge to recover. Despite his impressive 929 run score and three centuries, he lacked the bizarre consistency that has been his hallmark.

Following the conclusion of the third and final test of the series, the selectors are anticipated to make a decision over Warner’s replacement. Notably, Australia’s next red-ball assignment after the current home games is a two-match Test series against the West Indies at home. On Wednesday, January 17, in Adelaide, the first meeting will take place.
