Regarding his future with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), an Indian Premier League (IPL) team, former captain MS Dhoni has been candid. He reiterated his long-term dedication to the team, characterising his relationship with CSK as significant and enduring.
Since the IPL’s first season in 2008, Dhoni has played a crucial role in leading the five-time champions through multiple winning seasons. He took over as captain once more in the 2025 campaign after Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined by an elbow ailment. However, the season proved to be challenging for the team, as CSK only managed four victories from 14 games, ending last in the points standings for the first time ever.
MS Dhoni latest comments are interpreted as a sign of his ongoing commitment with the team beyond his playing days, despite the lacklustre performance.
“CSK and I are together. Even for the next 15 to 20 years, you know (crowd cheers). It is my wish that they do not anticipate my playing for another 15 to 20 years! But sure,” MS Dhoni stated at a private function in Chennai, according to the Hindustan Times.
After the IPL 2024 season, there have been rumours that the 44-year-old may retire from the sport. Dhoni, however, recovered well from his knee injury and carried on playing. Additionally, he has stated that Gaikwad will come back and take up his position as the team’s captain.
“One or two years isn’t the point. I’ll be sitting in a yellow jersey forever. “You know yourself,” Dhoni continued, “but you also know whether I’ll be playing or not in a while.”
When asked about his playing future at another function, MS Dhoni had previously refrained from responding directly. He was more candid during the event as he talked about the franchise’s future and his thoughts on CSK’s poor season.
Indeed, we have not had a nice couple of years. We haven’t performed well enough. However, it is crucial that you observe the lessons. You did have a poor season. However, what went wrong? And we had similar question last year as well,” MS Dhoni remarked.
