Three accusations of violating the ICC Anti-Corruption Code have been brought against Sri Lankan cricketer Praveen Jayawickrama by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The following violations under the Code have been levied against Jayawickrama:
- Article 2.4.4 – Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received to carry out fixing in future International Matches.
- Article 2.4.4 –Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received in which he was asked to approach another player, on a corrupter’s behalf, to carry out fixing in the 2021 Lanka Premier League.
- Article 2.4.7 – Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages in which the approaches and offers to engage in corrupt conduct were made.
The ICC and Sri Lanka Cricket have decided that the ICC will handle the charges related to the Lanka Premier League in addition to the charges related to international matches, in compliance with Articles 1.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code. Mr. Jayawickrama will have 14 days starting on August 6, 2024, to address the allegations. At this time, the ICC will not be commenting on these charges further.
Regarding Sri Lanka, the Lankan Lions, led by interim head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, defeated India 2-0 in the One-Day International series. After a torturous 27 years—the latest occurring in 1997—this triumph was their first-ever bilateral series win over the Men in Blue. Remarkably, in that assignment for the island nation, Jayasuriya was named Player of the Series.
