‘I wasn’t trying to prove anything’ – Karun Nair on Test comeback

"I was batting well throughout the series and getting into the 30s and 40s, but I just wasn’t able to push on," Nair said.

'I wasn’t trying to prove anything' - Karun Nair on Test comeback

For the just finished five-match series against England, Karun Nair made his maiden appearance in the Indian Test setup in seven years. He was unable to duplicate the kind of accomplishments he had attained at the domestic level, though, which had enabled him to return to the national squad.

In eight innings, Karun Nair scored 205 runs at an average of 25.62. He batted in a variety of positions during the series, but he was unable to establish himself in any of them. The right-hander lamented his inability to turn his starts into significant runs.

“I wasn’t attempting to prove anything, really. In most games, you occasionally get started and then figure out a method to quit. India Today cited Nair as adding, “That was the case for me in England.”

Karun Nair claimed to have already begun working on that area of his game by talking with coaches and close friends after realising how important it is to improve on starts.

“I was getting into my 30s and 40s and batting well throughout the series, but I just couldn’t keep up.” More than anyone else, that irritated me. I’ve been thinking about why I kept leaving after getting set and why it was happening. Making sure I convert the beginnings I receive is the only lesson I’ve learnt. I’ve discussed it with several individuals and heeded their advice. In order to convert it the next time I have a start, I’ll be working on it shortly,” he continued.

I’m not planning ahead too much: Karun Nair

In October, the West Indies is expected to reach India. In November, there will be a series versus South Africa. Nair may be taken into consideration by the selectors for the two India A series scheduled against visiting Australia A and South Africa A teams. Karun Nair wants to get better every day and doesn’t want to look too far ahead.

“I’m not planning ahead too much. I’m working on my game and applying the lessons I learnt from the previous series, one day at a time. We’ll have to wait and see what occurs. For me, it’s about getting better every day, both in terms of my abilities and my level of fitness,” he continued.

Additionally, Karun Nair thinks that Shubman Gill’s relatively young Indian side will contribute to India’s success in the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. India defeated England 2-2 in the UK to kick off their campaign with a boost to their spirits.

“Yes, we’re off to a good start. We performed admirably throughout the series, but we must keep up the good work, continue to do what we did well against England, and make the necessary improvements. As players, we’re working hard to get better every day, and we’re hoping to perform well this cycle,” Nair stated.
