The cricketing world is currently at the feet of Australian captain Pat Cummins, who not only led his country to victory in the World Test Championship 2023 but also secured the ODI World Cup victory, defeating India in the tournament’s last match.
But before winning the ODI World Cup, the captain of Australia had to deal with the death of his mother a few months earlier. Maria, his mother, lost her battle with breast cancer. Cummins traveled from India to Australia to see her at the 2023 Border Gavaskar Trophy because to her illness.
The “Barmy Army,” an English fan group, performed “Maria” on the West Side Story trumpet in honor of his mother and shared the video on social media. In relation to the video, Cummins claimed that he played it for his mother and she expressed her admiration for it.
“Our family has always loved cricket, so it was truly special to see our oldest rivals treat us with such respect and affection.” I’m sure she would have been extremely proud. She’s witnessed a lot of my accomplishments before this year, and I think of her every day,” Cummins said in an interview with ABC Sport.

Pat Cummins also acknowledged that his parents had always kept him grounded. He reinforced their emphasis on how fortunate they were to live in the nation by drawing attention to their faces.
“Our parents constantly reminded us how fortunate we are to be in this country and have access to all the opportunities we do, but they also made sure we opened our eyes and realized we are but a tiny, tiny part of a very big world,” Pat Cummins said.
