Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, recently talked about an unprecedented occasion during the Barbados final, where the Men in Blue overcame South Africa by seven runs to win their second T20 World Cup.
After a bad start, Rohit thought back on how Virat Kohli’s innings stabilised the team. After losing Rohit, Rishabh Pant, and Suryakumar Yadav early on, India’s decision to bat first had a negative impact on their start. The opener acknowledged that there was tension in the dressing room.
“You’ve got a good start if you hit three boundaries in the first over. All cricket players desire that. The years of experience playing for India are beneficial. You have the ability to regulate your thoughts, emotions, and present-moment awareness. He was probably thinking the same thing: “I need to be focused today.” Not paying attention to the past. He also had an outstanding innings.
A wonderful collaboration with Axar. There were clearly a lot of nervousness in the locker room after losing those three wickets up front. I was in a panic. I felt uneasy. I assumed we would allow them to play the game. Though it hadn’t batted much during the competition, Rohit told JioCinema, “I always thought in the back of my mind that our lower middle order had made an impact whenever given the opportunity.”
Rohit Sharma Kohli will only play in ODIs.
After struggling for form during the competition, Kohli settled the innings with a hammering 76 off 59 balls. In their allocated 20 overs, the team reached 176/7 thanks to his partnerships of 47 runs with Shivam Dube and 72 runs with Axar Patel. India’s bowling later ended the Proteas’ ICC trophy streak by limiting them to 169/8. Both Rohit and Kohli declared their retirement from T20Is following the game.
With 4,231 runs in 159 games, including five hundreds, Rohit retired as India’s top run scorer in the format. Kohli, who scored 4,188 runs in 125 games, came in second. In May 2025, just a few days after retiring from Twenty20 Internationals, the pair hung up their boots from Test cricket. When India tours Bangladesh in August of this year, two of the greatest players of the contemporary era will exclusively concentrate on the 50-over format.
