After New Zealand thumped England by nine wickets in the 2023 ODI World Cup opening in Ahmedabad, former England captain Eoin Morgan said the following:
Nobody could have predicted how the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 first match would turn out. England suffered a humiliating loss as New Zealand enjoyed a fantastic day. It is more difficult to accept even if they had added another 30 runs to get a par score since I don’t believe their bowling was strong enough to stop them.
A sufficient number of England batters received starts, but it didn’t seem like they delivered many hits during the inning. In many ways, they escaped on their own, not thanks to New Zealand. But Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra deserve praise for their performances. Conway put England under pressure right away, and Ravindra’s performance on his World Cup debut was extraordinary. He epitomized class.
From an English standpoint, we have grown accustomed to expecting a certain degree of aggressiveness from Jos Buttler‘s team, no matter the situation. We didn’t recognize that in a forceful enough manner, and this setback dramatically highlights the proper approach to play throughout this World Cup. Their greatest strength moving ahead is being more aggressive, and I believe Jos’ message will be “we need to go harder” in that regard.
One thing is for certain: their campaign won’t collapse with a single setback. Eight members of this squad were present in 2019, when we dropped three games in the group stages en route to winning the title, and they will undoubtedly draw on that knowledge. No team competes in a World Cup from beginning to end without facing some type of difficulty, whether it be losing games or running into problems during actual matches. Nothing will change with this.
There will be many level-headed people in the changing room, but there will also be many honest people. Since I shared a locker room with these guys, I can attest that every message is well considered, and frivolous remarks or targets are quite infrequent. There is an understanding that everyone is involved in this together and that everyone is working toward the same goal by following the same procedure.
In the lead-up to the competition, I predicted England would win, and I still do. I have no doubts that they can win the championship based on how they played today. The benefit of this structure is that, unlike the previous one, where one terrible day could send you home within a week, one bad day won’t spoil your tournament. They still have a chance to win this World Cup, in my opinion.
If they are to accomplish that, Ben Stokes’ return will be crucial. There is no way to quantify the influence he has in a changing room, but the difference he makes is priceless. He has demonstrated that he can win matches despite the odds, supporting his belief that he can accomplish anything. He fosters self-assurance and faith.
He will most likely be speaking in that locker room after such a humiliating loss. His actions support his words, which gives them a lot of weight. Hopefully, he will be back on the field as quickly as possible. He will have had a terrific view of the entire game.
Conditions may dictate additional changes for England’s upcoming encounter against Bangladesh in Dharamsala. Reece Topley or David Willey may have a chance because it’s customarily a bit more seam-friendly, and if Ben Stokes is healthy, he will surely return right away.
On a personal level, it is fantastic to be here, and there is a tremendous amount of excitement. Being able to relax and take in a World Cup as a fan is far more fun. I’m definitely enjoying it more now because of your concentrated personality and the effort you put forth to create performances and victories as a player. When I arrived for today’s game, I was much more excited than I ever allowed myself to be as a player.
Throughout my career, I didn’t express my emotions a lot simply because doing so prevented me from being the player I was and it hindered my effectiveness. For me, being emotional when making decisions didn’t work. It is now a pleasure and an honor to witness these talented athletes represent England in white-ball cricket.
