Women's T20 World Cup 2024: How can India make it to the semi-finals?

The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is well under way, and India, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, has had a rocky start to the tournament thus far. In the competition, the Women in Blue have participated in two games, winning and losing one each.

India is currently ranked fourth in the standings with two points. The team’s disastrous 58-run loss against New Zealand to begin the tournament has complicated matters about qualification. Despite losing their opening match of the season, India bounced back from the setback by defeating Pakistan by six wickets.

The net-run-rate dent from the first game and the loss have not been sufficiently offset by the victory over Pakistan, though; after two games, it stands at -1.217. The Women in Blue, who have not yet won a game in the tournament, have the second-worst net run rate in their group, just ahead of Sri Lanka.

India can still get to the competition’s semifinals in spite of the disadvantages.

But winning their next two games might not be enough, so they will also need some good fortune on their side in addition to playing well. On October 9, they take on Sri Lanka, and in the last group-stage match, on October 13, they take on the formidable Australians.

India’s simplest route to the semifinals would be to win both games and hope that Pakistan and New Zealand drop their final two games. In the event that Australia loses its final two games, they can also advance to the knockout stages with six points.

The teams will want to provide their finest performances in the next few games as the Women’s T20 World Cup gets closer. Indian women would also be hoping for a little good fortune.
