Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has spoken out on the BCCI’s new rules on relatives accompanying players abroad. After India’s Test series loss to Australia, the BCCI limited family members’ stay with players abroad.
The new rules allow families to accompany athletes for 14 days on 45-day trips. Virat Kohli, a seasoned hitter, vocally opposed the regulation.
Gambhir said players should realise they are not on vacation while representing India abroad.
He said having families around is wonderful, but cricket must always be the priority.
Family is vital, but you must realise this. You have a mission. It’s not holiday. You serve a major purpose. Few people in that dressing room or on this tour get to make the country proud. I don’t mind not having families “NDTV Sports cited Gambhir as saying to Cheteshwar Pujara.
“Families are vital, but if your objective is to make our country proud and you have a lot bigger role than anything else, I think everything else is fine. But I value that cause and purpose beyond all else “Gambihir explained.
England concluded Day 1 at 251 for 4, with Joe Root undefeated on 99 and skipper Ben Stokes on 39 at the crease. Nitish Kumar Reddy took wickets of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett for India, while Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja each took one.
