One of the most adaptable batters in the modern age, Travis Head can be just as effective opening the innings or playing in the middle order, where he typically appears. In Perth, the left-hander once again shown his versatility by putting on a batting display, hammering an 83-ball 123 in the opening Ashes Test to help Australia win.
Head remarked that the significance of set batting orders is frequently exaggerated in the discussion surrounding batting positions. Captain Pat Cummins, who also stated last month that batting order is overrated, shared his opinion. Head feels that rather than rigidly following predetermined positions, the emphasis should be on placing players in roles that best enhance the team’s chances of victory given the depth and adaptability of Australia’s roster.
“This order and these individuals, in my opinion, might be used in a variety of ways, and in any method that is required to win cricket matches. Pat is right when he says that batting orders are a little overrated. The traditionalists would argue that batting orders must be that way, but this is where the game is headed. When is the appropriate moment to use it? There will be both positive and negative aspects to it. However, it’s always changing,” Head stated, as cited by Cricbuzz.
With the ultimate goal of giving Australia the best chance to win, Head noted that the squad has long discussed the flexibility to change the batting order based on personnel and match circumstances. He went on to say that while opening the second innings at the Optus Stadium was a calculated move that England had not expected, he was excited to play the part.
“Over the past few years, we’ve thrown around scenarios quite a bit. We’ve discussed that a lot, including how to get there, what staff you need to maybe accomplish that, and the personalities in the lineup. “It’s just figuring it out in the game and when you might use that and when that might come out,” Head added.
“I consider myself really fortunate to have opened a lot of international cricket matches. Even though I am aware that it is white-ball cricket, I have frequently switched between fielding and batting, which takes ten to twenty minutes. My first thirty balls seemed extremely sound to me, but as their strategy changed, so did my perspective. “I was really composed in that situation,” he continued.
On the second day, Head counterattacked the English bowlers on a difficult Perth surface, producing an innings that left the cricketing world in awe. He had opened for Australia in Test cricket eight times on the subcontinent, but this was the first time he had done so at the top of the order at home, filling in when Usman Khawaja was unavailable to bat.
“I’m open to (opening) because I feel like I can play any character. When it was announced that (Khawaja) most likely wouldn’t be able to return to the pitch, my thoughts were somewhat moved from England being six, seven or eight down to the fact that I was quite eager to do it (open). It all comes down to assessing risks and identifying potential weak points.
“I’ve always attempted to manipulate percentages to my advantage,” Head remarked.
Australia has defeated the West Indies in January 2024, but they have won two of their three pink-ball day-night Test matches at the Gabba. In the meanwhile, they have participated in eight day-night matches in Adelaide and won each one. Head defended the format and rejected Joe Root’s recent assertion that the Ashes didn’t need a day-night Test.
“We’ve played a few (of Tests) here, and it’s been a good venue, but I believe the balls react a little bit differently on the wicket here compared to Adelaide.” Here, it’s sold out for four days, but we’ve accepted it. We’ve succeeded in producing a quality product. With it, we’ve been able to play incredibly well,” Head remarked.
“Is it not necessary for (the Ashes)? It’s an amazing show. There will be enormous crowds once more. You believe it’s fantastic if you win, but perhaps not if you lose. By the end of it, both teams will have different perspectives,” he said.
