Harry Brook after series loss to Australia -'It's a new brand of cricket we're trying to play, and I think we've done that perfectly'

Harry Brook expressed satisfaction with the way England adopted a new strategy even though his side lost the five-match series against Australia 2-3. On Sunday, September 29, the Three Lions were defeated by 49 runs (by the DLS system) in the rain-shortened final ODI at County Ground, Bristol, as Australia won the series thanks to the all-around skill of Travis Head.

England was set to bat first, and after 25 overs, they thrashed 202/3. To keep the runs coming in, they lost their final seven wickets for a mere 107 runs in 24.2 overs. Australia also had an aggressive game plan, smashing 165 runs in 20.4 overs for the loss of two wickets before rain called off play. Play could not be continued as Australia won the match with a significant margin.

But in the long run, Brook believes that England’s new strategy for ODI cricket will benefit them. The series’ acting captain was pleased with his team’s performance in carrying out the strategy.

“Our focus is not just on the here and now, but also on the future,” stated Brook, the winner of the ODI player of the summer award.

“Our goal is to prepare for the more significant events and series. We’re trying to play a different kind of cricket, and I believe we’ve done it brilliantly. We didn’t get the wickets we needed coming out of the power play, but other than that, we did extremely well,” he continued.

Prior to this series, Brook’s ODI cricket record wasn’t particularly impressive. But he did able to show glimpses of his talent with some outstanding performances, particularly in the last three games when he hammered a tonne and two half-centuries.

“Getting on the scoreboard, scoring a few runs, and helping to win some games is good. The 25-year-old stated, “I haven’t played too much, but it’s good to finally get the ODI cricket tempo.”

Brook said that it was fun to lead the England team for the first time as captain. But he did say that he will now step back and allow Jos Buttler, the normal skipper, take over.
