“You can’t count him out,” says PCB head selector Haroon Rasheed about Shadab Khan’s chances in red-ball cricket.

"You can't count him out," says PCB head selector Haroon Rasheed about Shadab Khan's chances in red-ball cricket.

Haroon Rasheed, who is in charge of picking players for Pakistan, thinks that star all-rounder Shadab Khan has a future in Test cricket, even though he hasn’t made the most of the chances he’s had so far. Pakistan will play two Test matches away from home against Sri Lanka in July. This will be their first task in the new World Test Championship cycle (2023–25).

Haroon Rasheed said that Shadab Khan can’t be left out of red-ball cricket because they are thinking about picking some white-ball cricketers who can also play red-ball cricket.

He did admit, though, that it might be hard to get players from limited-overs cricket who haven’t played Test cricket in a long time to switch to the longer version of the game.

“You can’t count Shadab Khan out because we are also thinking about the possibility that some of our white-ball players could also play Test cricket. Haroon Rasheed told Cricket Pakistan, “It’s not that they can’t play, but we’re worried that if they haven’t played the longer format in a long time, switching them from white-ball to red-ball cricket might be hard.”

He then talked about how physically demanding Test cricket is. He said that if a player isn’t used to bowling 15 to 20 overs in a single day, how can they expect a bowler who only bowls four overs in a spell to be any good? He also said that they will get the players ready for first-class cricket and then watch how they do.

“If someone isn’t used to bowling 15 to 20 overs in a single day, how can we expect a bowler who throws four overs in a spell, each of which is two overs, to be able to bowl for a long time?” Because of this, we will first put them in first-class cricket and then watch how they do,” he said.

He also said that how the players do in the next Test series will be the most important factor in who gets picked.

“Let’s see what happens in these test matches and how the guys do. We have a lot of competition in bowling, so whoever wins will do so based on how well they do,” the person in charge of choosing the team said.
