Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur described how her leadership style has been greatly influenced by her stint with the Mumbai Indians (MI) club and the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Last year, the 36-year-old made history by becoming the first Indian skipper to win the Women’s ODI World Cup.
Since the WPL’s founding in 2023, Harmanpreet has been active. She has previously won two WPL championships with the Mumbai Indians, in 2023 and 2025.
We have received a different kind of exposure thanks to the WPL. A winning mindset is naturally developed when you play in a setting where every game counts and every team is competitive. At a press conference, Harmanpreet stated, “The Mumbai Indians, in particular, have always prioritised excellence, and that rubs off on you as a player and as a leader.”
Harmanpreet claimed to have a particular place in her heart for Mumbai and described how it had benefited her career.
“I feel that Mumbai is unique.” The city’s energy and the support you receive here have a significant impact. You can express yourself freely on the pitch since it’s a place where I’ve always felt at ease’, Harmanpreet remarked.
I find the family vibe to be very noteworthy: Harmanpreet on the MI team
According to Harmanpreet, who liked the environment in the MI camp, players are able to express themselves because of the coaching staff’s and management’s backing.
I find the family-like environment to be particularly noteworthy. Players play fearlessly when they perceive that the coaching staff and management are behind them. The Punjabi-born said, “That trust and support is essential, especially in high-pressure tournaments like the WPL.”
At the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, defending champions Mumbai will play Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday, January 9, to kick off their WPL 2026 campaign.
