Harmanpreet Kaur Under Pressure in ‘Last’ World Cup, Says Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra, a former Indian cricket player, believes Harmanpreet Kaur is under pressure to lead India in the Women’s World Cup. Thus far, Harmanpreet Kaur has only amassed 40 runs in India’s opening two tournament games.

Although Harmanpreet Kaur has participated in multiple World Cups, Chopra emphasised that she has done so as a player rather than captain. He also emphasised the possibility that Harmanpreet Kaur, who is currently 36, won’t be present at the upcoming World Cup.

“Pressure will be present. You are the captain, to start. This is your fifth World Cup, your first as captain, and she may be thinking that this is also the final one. She is not likely to play in the upcoming ODI World Cup. Therefore, the pressure is there,” Chopra said in a Star Sports interview.

Chopra added that Harmanpreet Kaur lack of significant goals after starting so far could cause problems for the team.

“On the surface, you may claim that everything is fine if the others are also receiving starts but aren’t turning them into significant scores, but deep down you know that you must help. A team becomes somewhat weaker if its captain fails to score runs or lead from the front. The captain must therefore score. She will undoubtedly feel a little pressure,” he continued.

India Women have so far won both of their competitions at the major event. They began by defeating co-hosts Sri Lanka (DLS method) by 59 runs in Guwahati. They next defeated bitter rivals Pakistan by 88 runs in Colombo.

India will welcome South Africa on October 9 and Australia on October 12 at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam for their next two matches.
