In Match 12 of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, India Women pulled off the greatest act of retaliation possible, defeating Sri Lanka Women by an overwhelming 82 runs. Despite both batsmen being out of the game after consecutive deliveries in the game’s thirteenth over, Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain, was the one who eventually delivered.
The Indians understood they needed to put a big total on the board to have the best chance of winning a big game and increase their net run rate to the highest level following a crushing loss to the Kiwis in the opening match of their group-stage campaign. And that’s just how Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, the openers, batted. Of the two, Shafali was the more laid-back, while the southpaw had greater initiative.
With just one over in overs 16–20 when Harmanpreet Kaur scored fewer than a few boundaries, the Indian captain wrapped off the first innings in fine fashion.
The Indians scored a competitive 172 runs, with Harmanpreet reaching her half-century on the final delivery of the innings. Every single Sri Lankan bowler proved to be costly, with the exception of Inoshi Priyadharshani and Kavisha Dilhari, who both had figures of 0/11 in their few overs.
In terms of the run-chase, it was the worst start the Lankans could have had, but it was the best start the Indians could have had. The Indians’ first three overs yielded three wickets, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Although they didn’t bat at the pace that was anticipated of them, Dilhari and Anushka Sanjeewani did put on a respectable fourth-wicket stand. Sri Lanka Women were skittled for just 90 runs with one delivery remaining despite Ama Kanchana’s best efforts to keep the scoreboard moving from one end. She did not have the necessary support from the middle and lower middle-order.
Nine out of the ten Lankan wickets were caught out, demonstrating the excellent fielding from the Indian team. What was equally commendable, aside from the fielding, was the bowling effort. When she and Renuka Singh opened the bowling, Shreyanka Patil was frugal. During their separate periods, each bowled a total of 14 dot balls.

Taking three wickets apiece, Arundhati Reddy and Asha Sobhana recorded the same stats (3/19). Leg-byes were the only extras available, and they added five runs to the Lankan total at the end.
