Hardik fan’s security breach leads to venue change

The forthcoming Baroda vs. Gujarat match has been moved to improve safety after fans stormed the pitch to greet Hardik Pandya amid repeated pitch invasions during Baroda’s match against Punjab. There are significant worries about player security in relation to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025.

Originally set for December 4 at Hyderabad’s Gymkhana Ground, the Baroda-Gujarat game will now be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The move was made in response to security concerns raised during Baroda’s last game when fans repeatedly crossed the barrier. The international arena was chosen by authorities because it offers greater space to supervise spectators, improved crowd control infrastructure, and stricter security measures.

In Hyderabad, Pandya’s eagerly anticipated return drew sizable audiences. One fan ran onto the field during the Punjab game, made it to the all-rounder, and took a selfie before security arrived. A number of other pitch invasions ensued, necessitating short stops. Safety protocols were immediately reviewed as a result of these instances, which sparked concerns among state associations and team management. Authorities were anxious to prevent a recurrence because Hardik is one of the most popular cricket players in India.

India’s SA T20I team includes Hardik Pandya.

The 32-year-old opened the bowling for Baroda after more than two months of recuperation due to a quadricep ailment. He gave up 52 runs in four overs, though, so his comeback with the ball was far from what he had hoped for. He dismissed Anmolpreet Singh, who had previously scored 69 off 32 balls, in the 14th over, his lone wicket.

But Baroda was overrun by Hardik’s batting. He hit an undefeated 77 off 42 balls, including seven boundaries and four sixes, as he walked in following a solid opening stand. Baroda maintained their lead above the necessary rate thanks to an outstanding 101-run partnership with Shivalik Sharma. Hardik hit back-to-back sixes with 13 needed off nine balls to end the match and lead Baroda to a seven-wicket victory.

Notably, Hardik’s return was confirmed when the BCCI recently revealed India’s team for the five-match T20I series against South Africa. The all-rounder, who hasn’t played for India since the Asia Cup in September, is expected to bolster India’s middle order with his return.
