Harbhajan Singh is currently being associated with the top position at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), following Sachin Tendulkar. Although Harbhajan has not yet provided an explanation, Tendulkar has previously denied being involved, raising questions about his potential interest.
With the 45-year-old former spinner, who has 367 international caps across all forms, being nominated by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), there seems to be some real weight to the most recent rumours. Since only candidates supported by a state association are allowed to run, the situation will become more apparent after the nominations are formally filed.
It is well known that the ruling BJP, which has significant control over how the BCCI operates, favours successful athletes for leadership roles in sports organisations. Due in great part to the ruling party’s player-first approach, former India internationals Roger Binny and Sourav Ganguly rose to the position of BCCI president.
Cricbuzz’s calls and texts were not answered by Harbhajan Singh.
But in less than two weeks, when candidates must submit nominations for the positions, the truth should come to light. The elections are set for September 28, and the nomination period will run from September 20 to 21, according to BCCI electoral officer AK Joti.
The positions of president, vice president, secretary, joint secretary, and treasurer will all be up for election. Recent BCCI AGM trends suggest that competition for these posts is unlikely. As secretary, treasurer, and joint secretary, respectively, incumbents Devajit Saikia, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, and Rohan Dessai are anticipated to remain in their positions.
The deadline for state associations to submit the names of their representatives who would attend the AGM and, if necessary, cast their ballots was Friday, September 12, in accordance with the election schedule. It is anticipated that the list will be revealed on Saturday, September 13.
On September 22, the nominees will be examined following their filing on September 20 and 21. On September 23, candidates will have the opportunity to withdraw their nominations; the final list of candidates will then be revealed. September 28 is the date of the election and counting.
Candidates must indicate whether they have held any roles inside the BCCI, per the electoral officer. “An information sheet from the representative listing all of the elective positions that the representative and/or any full member of the BCCI have held in the past and/or present, along with the titles of those positions and their tenures.” The notification states that the Representative’s signature and a notary or oath commissioner’s proper attestation must be included with the information in the prescribed Form C.
