Hannan Sarkar to step down as Bangladesh national selector

Hannan Sarkar, the national selector for Bangladesh, has made the decision to resign from his role just days before his term is over. Sarkar was appointed in March 2024, and February 26 was the scheduled expiration date of his term. But because he hopes to be in the coaching setup soon, the veteran has chosen to step down before the deadline.

In a formal letter to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on February 1, Sarkar affirmed his choice. He also stated that although he wanted to finish his term, he had to make a choice for the greater good. He served for nearly ten years as a U-19 selector and was an age-level selector prior to becoming a national selector.

“Yes, I did deliver the letter to the board yesterday requesting my resignation from the selection committee. Since I want to work as a coach, I don’t want to continue on the national selection panel.

If the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) thinks they can have me as a coach in their setup, I’m willing to think about it,” Hannan Sarkar remarked.

“This decision has no other justifications. Everything was going so well. However, I believed that my future career would be coaching. Through coaching, I believe I can make a greater impact on Bangladeshi cricket from this role,” the former player stated.

“My contribution as a selector was acceptable. In my opinion, though, coaching would be a better long-term career choice. It was something I had been considering for a while. He continued, “I have now formally moved forward with it.

Notably, during his two-year international career, the 42-year-old has participated in 17 Test matches and 20 One-Day Internationals for Bangladesh. He was the U-19 team’s selector, and the 2020 group went on to win the championship. Under his vigilance, the U-19 squad also captured their first Asia Cup championship in 2024. He was appointed as the national selector by BCB due to his extensive achievements at the grassroots level.
