After sustaining a right hamstring strain during England’s innings-and-45-run victory over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge last week, spinner Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the forthcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies. In order to be ready for the forthcoming five-match Test series against India beginning on June 20, the 27-year-old pacer will now undertake rehabilitation under the guidance of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) medical team.
The hosts will not name a replacement for Gus Atkinson, who joins Jofra Archer, who was previously ruled out due to a thumb injury, before the first ODI against the West Indies is scheduled to start at Edgbaston on Thursday. Left-arm seamer Luke Wood was selected to replace Archer after he suffered the injury during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Despite the loss, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts, and Wood make up the hosts’ potent pace unit for the ODIs.
Gus Atkinson had a stellar 2024 season, taking 54 wickets in 11 Test matches, including an incredible 12-wicket haul at Lord’s on his debut.
In the one-time Test match against Zimbabwe, Gus Atkinson sustained the injury while bowling brilliantly, finishing with figures of 2-58 in the first innings and 1-17 in the second. On the last day of the game, though, he was clearly uncomfortable as he was only able to complete three overs before being forced to stop.
Despite not being picked for the West Indies series’ Twenty20 International, he is an important part of England’s Test strategy. In order to make sure he returns to full condition before the five-Test series against India, his recuperation is being constantly watched.
England’s three-match ODI series against the West Indies has a new squad.
Brydon Carse, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Tom Hartley, Saqib Mahmood, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood, Jos Buttler, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, and Tom Banton
