Reports: Greg Barclay will be replace as ICC chairman by Jay Shah

Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has one week to decide who will succeed Greg Barclay, the 62-year-old Hamiltonian who is currently the chairperson of the International Cricket Council. Barclay has indicated that he does not wish to serve a third term.

This November will mark the completion of Greg Barclay first term as the independent ICC chairperson, having been appointed in November 2020.

In a press release, the ICC laid out the timeline for the present directors to suggest candidates and the steps to take in the event that multiple candidates apply for the esteemed position.

According to a media statement from the ICC, “Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by August 27, 2024, and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the new chair’s term commencing on December 1, 2024.”

Shah will have to give up his position as secretary of the BCCI for one year as a result of being appointed head of the ICC. Further ramifications include Shah’s requirement for a three-year decompression period.

According to The Age, Barclay announced his plan to resign from his position as ICC chair during a video conference after Shah had told him about his preference for him to succeed Barclay.

The future of the ICC’s management, which is based in Dubai and is led by Australian CEO Geoff Allardice, is still up in the air.

Shah’s accession to the throne coincides with Star’s request for relief from the massive financial agreement it reached with the ICC at the close of business in 2022 for the right to broadcast international cricket matches in India between 2024 and 2027.

According to rumours, Star’s delegates wish to renegotiate the terms of the agreement and reduce its worth by up to 50%. Consequently, this would mean that over the following four years, the budgets of the big cricket-playing nations would lose millions of dollars.
