Graeme Smith, who is currently the League Commissioner for the T20 franchise league, which is scheduled to start on December 26, was questioned regarding his old teammate Morne Morkel, who is currently India’s bowling coach under Gautam Gambhir. Smith responded with a humorous comment.
Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthuswamy, the team’s two spinners, are expected to do well against India in the forthcoming two-match Test series, according to former South African captain Graeme Smith. The historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata will host the first Test match between the two teams starting on November 14.
India, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, is anticipated to defeat the defending World Test Championship champions with a dominant showing at home. In the meanwhile, South Africa will depend on their strong pace assault, which includes Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada, as well as Corbin Bosch’s versatility.
“The series is a good place to start in Eden Gardens. Both Muthuswamy and Maharaj, our two spin options, are excellent. The most crucial thing in a Test match is to take 20 wickets. Graeme Smith said, “I have faith in the team,” according to NDTV Sports, during a SA20 India Day event in Mumbai on Wednesday.
“Morkel is the enemy now,” Graeme Smith declared.
Getting off to a good start would be crucial in the forthcoming two-Test series against India, said Faf du Plessis, who was also in attendance. He emphasised that momentum is crucial in short series.
“The remainder of the series becomes simpler when you get off to a strong start. There are always big expectations. We have done well for the past 12 to 14 months. We also performed well in Pakistan. The topic of spinning conditions is discussed extensively. We only have two tests, which is awful. That is the new test schedule’s drawback. “I think there should be at least three tests,” Du Plessis declared.
Graeme Smith agreed with du Plessis that it’s critical to get the series off to a strong start. “A strong start could set the tone for the rest of the contest,” he said. On November 22, India and South Africa will play their first Test match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, followed by the second and final match in Guwahati.
“Belief is key in sports. With their optimism, South Africa would arrive. But losing a Test match as swiftly saps confidence. Getting that momentum will be crucial for them,” Graeme Smith stated.
“The key will be to counter Bumrah. Later on, spinners would be used. That will hit you hard, though, if you are down two or three before the spinners enter the game. Dealing with Bumrah will therefore be crucial. India is no different. It would be crucial to tackle Kagiso Rabada,” he continued.
