Government MPs urging England to boycott Champions Trophy clash with Afghanistan

There have been numerous conversations on the Champions Trophy 2025, a major cricket event that is quickly approaching. In recent months, the CT 2025 has been one of the most talked-about championships, from the location to the Indian team’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the matches.

However, a group of more than 160 lawmakers have called on the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to boycott their Champions Trophy match against Afghanistan next month in advance of the tournament.

It is important to remember that on February 26, England will host Afghanistan in Lahore.

Westminster has, however, called on the ECB to reject the match.

The Taliban regime’s attack on women’s rights was the cause of this. The Taliban’s regulations in Afghanistan have prohibited women from participating in sports. MP Tonia Antoniazzi penned the letter, which was signed by a broad cross-party group from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

We implore the players and administrators of the England men’s team to speak out against the Taliban’s appalling abuse of women and girls in Afghanistan. In order to make it abundantly evident that such heinous abuses will not be accepted, we further implore the ECB to think about boycotting the forthcoming game against Afghanistan,” the letter said.

The ECB strongly opposes Afghanistan’s treatment of women and girls: Richard Gould

In response to the letter, ECB CEO Richard Gould reaffirmed the ECB’s values while also indicating that they would rather see all teams take a consistent stance rather than acting independently. In addition, he emphasised that the ICC members should continue to be dedicated to the advancement of women’s cricket, which includes Afghanistan.

According to The Roar, Gould stated, “The ECB strongly condemns the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime.”

All member countries are required under the ICC Constitution to be dedicated to the advancement of women’s cricket. He said, “The ECB has upheld its stance of not planning any bilateral cricket matches against Afghanistan in accordance with this commitment.”
