In light of the escalating tensions across the border between India and Pakistan, BCCI decided on Friday, May 9, to suspend the IPL 2025. In a statement, the IPL announced that the 18th edition would be suspended for one week with immediate effect.
In light of the geopolitical tension between India and Pakistan, the IPL chairman, Arun Dhumal, has stated that there was no reason to keep the tournament going. Speculation centred on whether the remaining season would take place outside of India or during the Asia Cup window in September, which the Men in Blue are most likely to choose not to participate in.
But according to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, the board will meet to decide the league’s destiny after collecting input over the course of the next 48 hours. There are 16 games left in the season, including four playoff games.
“We are currently on the second day of the seven-day IPL suspension imposed by the BCCI yesterday, with five days remaining. Hours after India and Pakistan agreed a ceasefire, Saikia told Cricbuzz, “The BCCI is closely monitoring the evolving situation and developments and will take a call on IPL resumption after consulting all stakeholders of IPL and the concerned Government authorities.”
After receiving approval from the Indian government for the league’s restart, Saikia stated that the board will start talks with IPL stakeholders within the next 48 hours.
Before making a final decision about the league’s restart, we will start consulting with the teams, broadcasters, sponsors, and state associations that will host the remaining games within the next 48 hours. Considering how crucial the IPL is right now, it would also be wise and required to have the Indian government’s approval before deciding on a starting date. When everything is finished, BCCI will properly announce when the IPL will resume,” Saikia stated.
The Chennai Super Kings’ CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, stated that although the Men in Yellow may not be in the running for the playoffs, they still want the tournament to be finished. He claimed that they have already told the overseas players that they could need to return to the camp in a week and that they will work with the BCCI on a resumption.
“We want the league to be finished even though we are not in the running for a play-off spot. We want the IPL, a prominent competition, to work with the BCCI on this issue. The overseas players have been informed that they might need to return in a week because we only have two games left,” Viswanathan added.
