Recently, prominent New Zealand batsman Glenn Phillips spoke up about how he went from being a wicketkeeper to one of the best fielders in the world of cricket. The 27-year-old disclosed how much he despises wicketkeeping and how a back ailment allowed him to communicate his ideas.
Glenn Phillips disclosed that he advised New Zealand Cricket against selecting him in case they intended to use him as a wicketkeeper. Although he debuted in 2017, he hasn’t played since 2018 except as an all-around batsman.
He disclosed that the back pain served as the ideal justification for his actions. He also mentioned how, at one point, he had had enough of everyone on the pitch and that keeping had become boring for him since, when the ball wasn’t coming to him, there wasn’t any movement involved.
“Before that (back injury), I detested keeping for so long, but the back injury was the ideal justification. I told New Zealand cricket at the beginning that if I was going to play as a keeper, I didn’t want them to pick me any longer. I gladly made the decision to live by my sword and die by it when I jumped off that boat. Phillips stated to the Wisden, “I would rather continue doing what I was loving than hang around doing something I detested with a passion.
“I reached a breaking point where I lost all patience with everyone in the field. You are confined to a single location with only 10 meters of movement to the left and right. You are not participating in the game at all if the ball does not come to you, thus I thought it was a waste of time. It wasn’t enjoyable. There’s no running, no movement, and what good is doing anything if you’re not enjoying it? He went on.

It’s important to note that although Phillips has only kept wickets in Twenty20 Internationals, his all-around statistics have been more superior. Phillips had a strike rate of 117.94 and an average of 18.4 as a keeper. However, Phillips maintains an average of 34.28 runs at a strike rate of 143.67 in his role as an all-around player.
