Glenn Maxwell‘s expulsion from the Punjab Kings squad prior to the 2026 Indian Premier League has been explained by the team and management, according to head coach Ricky Ponting. Once a highly sought-after talent, Glenn Maxwell was one of the six players discharged by PBKS. Maxwell had a difficult time returning to PBKS in 2025. In six innings, he amassed 48 runs at a meagre 97.95 strike rate.
Glenn Maxwell total score appeared somewhat better than it could have because one of his six innings in the previous IPL had a thirty. Ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League, PBKS paid INR 4.2 crore to acquire the batting all-rounder’s services. Ponting’s candid admission that the think tank did not believe the star Australian could be included in the starting lineup was a major factor in their decision to overlook him.
I adore Glenn Maxwell and his contributions to the game.
Regretfully, we were unable to bring out the best in him last year. After the retentions were revealed on Saturday, Ponting told Star Sports, “We didn’t feel he would be part of our starting team looking ahead to this season, so we decided to release him.”
After four years with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Australian all-rounder returned to the PBKS lineup for the 2025 season. In actuality, the 2020 film was Glenn Maxwell second appearance with the Punjab-based team. Even then, he had a lacklustre season, scoring just 108 runs in 11 innings.
In his first season with PBKS in 2014, Glenn Maxwell was at his fiery best. He played 16 games and hit at an incredible 187.75. By the way, it was PBKS’s first season making it to the IPL final. Eleven years later, in 2025, they made it to the summit fight once more.
Maxwell was released along with Josh Inglis, Aaron Hardie, Kuldeep Sen, and Praveen Dubey. With four spots left, PBKS has INR 11.5 crore left in the purse going into the mini auction, which is scheduled for December 16 of next month. Whether Maxwell receives any bids at all and whoever team pursues him will be interesting to watch.
