Glenn Maxwell, an experienced all-rounder from Australia, is expected to return to the 50-over format, but not while wearing the national colours. The 36-year-old has been selected for Victoria’s first two Dean Jones Trophy matches, just months after formally retiring from ODIs. Glenn Maxwell unexpected comeback to the domestic 50-over league is set for Wednesday against Queensland and Friday against Tasmania at Allan Border Field.
After winning the Champions Trophy earlier this year, Glenn Maxwell ended his ODI career, which included 149 games, 3,990 runs, 77 wickets, and two World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023. In the Champions Trophy, he faced India in his final ODI match. He still plays in the shorter format even after retiring, and he will be part of Australia’s T20I tour to New Zealand. The Dean Jones Trophy has been selected by the Victorian mainstay as the venue for improving his skills.
Additionally, Matt Short returns to the 50-over game.
Notably, in recent years, the cricket player has hardly played in domestic List A cricket. He has only participated in one 50-over match for Victoria since March 2022, and that was against New South Wales in October 2023. He is not the only Australian international returning to action, though. Matt Short, a fellow member of the T20I squad, is also included in Victoria’s 14-man roster. Short has been out since July due to a side ailment that prevented him from playing in the South Africa series and the T20I tour of the West Indies.
He hasn’t participated in a 50-over match since the Champions Trophy, just like Glenn Maxwell.
All-rounder Will Sutherland will start as Victoria’s captain in the opening match. Peter Handscomb, a seasoned hitter, will take over as captain for the second game after Sutherland leaves for India to join the Australia A team. Tom Rogers, Sam Harper, and Marcus Harris are also on the team.
Marnus Labuschagne will captain Queensland, Victoria’s rivals. They will be without bowlers Xavier Bartlett and Mark Steketee, as well as Usman Khawaja, who is training for the Sheffield Shield before the Ashes.
Victoria team:
Will Sutherland, Callum Stow, Cam McClure, David Moody, Glenn Maxwell, Harry Dixon, Marcus Harris, Matt Short, Mitch Perry, Sam Elliott, Sam Harper, Blake Macdonald, Will Sutherland, and Peter Handscomb
