Shubman Gill was left out of India’s 15-man team for the forthcoming T20 World Cup by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) selectors. This year, Shubman had plenty of opportunities in the shortest format, but he was unable to reach his full potential. Since returning to the format at the Asia Cup in September, the gifted Punjab batsman has only amassed 291 runs at an average of 24.25 and a strike rate of 137.26 in 15 Twenty20 Internationals.
Without naming anyone, former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar seemed to be making a veiled jab at Gill by emphasising that strike rates should be prioritised more in the T20 format rather than individual milestones.
“In 20 innings, he has not scored a single fifty. a statistic frequently used to imply form loss. Strike rates are and always will be the focus of T20 cricket. When an out-of-form hitter approaches 50, the last thing you want is for him to play cautiously. You’ll lose the game because of this,” Manjrekar remarked on “X” (previously Twitter).
Gill omission is essentially a mistake corrected by selectors: Manjrekar
Manjrekar thinks that by removing Gill from the team, the selectors made amends for their error. After Shubman ended as the top run scorer in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year, the former cricket player turned broadcaster believed that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee went overboard.
This is what occurs when someone gets enthusiastically selected based on their T20 test performance. Manjrekar (using his X account) stated, “Gill’s omission is essentially selectors correcting a mistake they made when they got a bit carried away after the England tour.”
Ishan Kishan, who hasn’t played for India since December 2023 but was in excellent form when representing Jharkhand in the just finished Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, took Shubman’s position. The former, who was not selected for the T20 World Cup, will be playing for Punjab in the next Vijay Hazare Trophy.
