After his relationship with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reached an all-time low, Jason Gillespie resigned as head coach of Pakistan in December 2024.
When a fan asked the renowned former Australian speedster what he thought of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he responded, “It’s a great competition.” Then, another fan asked why, if he enjoyed Pakistan cricket’s top franchise T20 competition, he abandoned the sport.
In response, Gillespie talked candidly about his terrifying experiences playing cricket for Pakistan.
“I was coaching the Test team from Pakistan.” As head coach, I thought it was totally unacceptable that the PCB fired our senior assistant coach with absolutely no communication to me. There were several other problems that made me feel absolutely ashamed.
I was coaching the Pakistan Test side. The PCB sacked our senior assistant coach with ZERO communication with me about it- as Head Coach I found this situation completely unacceptable.
There were a number of other issues which left me completely humiliated.@stillnotoutpod https://t.co/AqATYAfiyg— Jason Gillespie (@dizzy259) January 1, 2026
In a September 2024 home Test series, Bangladesh defeated Pakistan 2-0 under Gillespie’s leadership. But later in the year, in a Test series against England, the Men in Green recovered admirably. Pakistan won two straight games to claim the series 2-1 after losing the opening Test. With this performance, the Asian giants appeared to be making a comeback in red-ball cricket. But Gillespie left his position as head coach in December 2024, right before the South Africa tour.
Currently ranked No. 5 in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle is Shan Masood’s Pakistan. In October 2025, they hosted two Test matches against South Africa. A 1-1 draw marked the conclusion of the series.
