In response to a challenging question on his exclusion from the Indian T20I team prior to the 2026 T20 World Cup, star batsman Shubman Gill stepped up. Gill has been left out of the Suryakumar Yadav-led team for the international event, even though he was the team’s vice captain in the last series. The 26-year-old is willing to accept his fate since he feels that it was predetermined for him.
Speaking to the media prior to the first ODI against New Zealand, Gill expressed his appreciation for the selection committee’s decision to not include him in the main event and wished the team luck in their title defence.
Gill feels that he had little influence on the team selection process.
First of all, I firmly believe that I am in the right place in my life. I shall have whatever is written in my destiny. Although my goal as a player is to help my team win games, I appreciate the decision made by the selectors. I want all the best for the T20 team. Gill stated at the pre-match press conference, “I hope they win the World Cup.”
Following a series of lacklustre performances in the game’s shortest format over the course of the year, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar decided to leave Gill out of India’s T20I plans. As a result, Sanju Samson took his spot as Abhishek Sharma’s favoured opening partner, while Axar Patel was reinstated as the deputy in-charge.
The group stage match versus the United States of America on February 7 will mark the start of the Men in Blue’s championship defence at the main event. In order to complete their group stage campaign, they will also play Namibia on February 10, Pakistan on February 14, and the Netherlands on February 18. They will advance to the Super 8s if they finish in the top two of their group.
