On Wednesday night, the Indian team conducted a comprehensive net practice, during which captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Shubman Gill were conspicuously inactive. Rohit seemed to be a passive participant the entire three-hour session, which took place in the ICC Academy facility here in Dubai under the lights. In contrast, Gill did not even touch the ground.
Although their inactivity was not officially announced, it is thought that Rohit is recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered during Sunday’s (February 23) second league encounter between India and Pakistan. During Pakistan’s innings, he left the field for a short while to go to the dressing room but then came back. During India’s successful chase of 242, Rohit batted as well, scoring 20 off 15 balls with three fours and one six.
While his teammates engaged in a vigorous batting session, Rohit watched from the sidelines.
He is reportedly exercising caution to avoid aggravating the injury in front of India’s third league match against New Zealand on March 2 and the forthcoming elimination stages, which include the semifinal on March 4 and maybe the final on March 9.
Given that both sides have already secured their spots in the semifinals and the match against New Zealand is essentially meaningless, it wouldn’t be shocking if Rohit takes it easy. Although there is the possibility of winning the group, it might not be worth taking any chances in the grand scheme of things. In any event, the squad is anticipated to alter the starting lineup from Sunday’s match.
Gill, meanwhile, remained inside. The vice-captain’s illness is discovered. He should be prepared for the game on March 2, though. After suffering from a fever, Rishabh Pant has fully recovered and batted for a considerable amount of time during the nets. Mohammed Shami was the only other player who didn’t bat at all that evening. He did, however, bowl everyone of the Indian front-line hitters, including Virat Kohli, at full pace.
