Gill Pushes for Longer Camps

After a devastating series loss to South Africa, Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill appears to be back to his best. In November 2025, the Proteas swept the hosts 2-0 in the two-match series, causing the Indian side to suffer yet another home series loss to the current World Test Champions, South Africa.

Following the 2-0 victory against the Proteas, India’s test captain is now prepared to make amends and has proposed certain adjustments that could improve Test Cricket preparation. In addition, this was India’s second home series loss in a single year, following a 3-0 loss to New Zealand in late 2024.

In order to help players and team management better prepare for the demands of the five-day format, Shubman Gill has suggested holding 15-day camps before to each Test series India plays. The Times of India claims that even the BCCI is prepared to follow the captain’s suggested course of action and is willing to grant the skipper additional control over the planning and preparation of Test cricket.

Gill made it very evident that the team needed to improve their readiness before starting a Test series.

This season, there was a problem with the schedule that left the team with little time to be ready. According to a BCCI insider, Gill suggested to the Board that it would be best if there were 15-day red-ball camps before to a Test series.

It is important to note that the Indian squad entered the series immediately following the conclusion of the white-ball assignment against the Australian team in Down Under, meaning they had only four days to prepare before the series against the Proteas.

“Gill is now displaying assertiveness. He is much more clearly communicating his vision to the BCCI and selectors. Given the need for a capable captain to succeed Rohit Sharma, this bodes well for Indian cricket. Gill owns the Test and ODI teams. It’s critical that he have more influence,” the person continued.

Gautam Gambhir concurs with the skipper.

After Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin retired, the Indian squad entered a transitional phase, and the right-hand batter assumed captaincy. Gill enjoyed a great tour of England in his first series as captain, scoring 754 runs and helping India draw 2-2. Before losing to the WTC winners, the hosts defeated the West Indies 2-0 at home under the command of the Fazilka native.

In a press conference following the series, Gautam Gambhir, the coach of India, too used similar language. He had said that planning and preparation might be improved and that timing is important. July of this year will mark India’s next Test match. The team will attempt to resume winning ways in the longest format when they travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match series.
