Given that the India captain is apparently ailing, Shubman Gill is probably going to miss the forthcoming Duleep Trophy, which begins in Bengaluru in a few days. He was named the North Zone team’s captain.
For the past several days, the North Zone selection committee has been preparing for the likelihood that Gill won’t be able to attend the inter-zonal tournament, which is set to start on August 28 at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. But as of Friday, August 22, they hadn’t heard from the North Zone associations in an official capacity.
But according to Cricbuzz, he was just assessed by physiotherapists, who roughly twenty-four hours ago sent a health status report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Gill, 25, is currently in Chandigarh, sleeping at home.
Specific enquiries concerning Gill’s availability were not immediately answered by BCCI and zonal and national selection committee officials, but the development was confirmed by people close to the India Test captain.
Since Gill was scheduled to go for national service in the Asia Cup beginning September 9 in the United Arab Emirates, he would not have participated in the whole Duleep Trophy. At best, he might have been eligible for just the first game of the Duleep Trophy, which takes place from August 28 to September 15. At the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence facility in Bengaluru, North Zone will play East Zone in their quarterfinal matchup.
Gill was selected by the national selectors for the India Twenty20 team for the Asia Cup after returning from a very successful tour of England earlier this month, during which he amassed 754 runs in five Test matches in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He was really named the Asia Cup’s vice captain.
In the event that Gill was unable to compete, the North Zone selectors had previously arranged for a substitute. When the squad was announced, Shubham Rohilla was selected to replace Gill. Ankit Kumar will now represent the North Zone in the Duleep Trophy after being selected vice-captain of the team.
After the opening match, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who were both selected for the Asia Cup roster, will unavoidably depart the zonal team to play for their country. Should North Zone get past the first game, which is a knockout match, Gurnoor Brar and Anuj Thakral were selected as the two pacers’ respective replacements.
The members of the North Zone selection committee are Raj Kumar (Services), Mukesh Kumar (Himachal Pradesh), Mithun Minhas (J&K and convenor), Amit Uniyal (Chandigarh), Nikhil Chopra (Delhi), and Chetan Sharma (Haryana).
