Geoffrey Boycott recovers from a successful throat cancer operation

Sir Geoffrey Boycott, the former captain of England, had his throat cancer successfully removed during surgery. He received an update on the same from his daughter Emma Boycott. This is the second time in the 83-year-old’s life that he has confronted throat cancer; he had disclosed the diagnosis in early July.

Boycott battled cancer in 2002 when he was 62 years old; in June 2024, he received word that the disease had resurfaced. Boycott took 35 chemotherapy sessions following his initial diagnosis, and he attributed his recovery to his daughter Emma and wife Rachael’s unflinching support.

Emma Boycott announced the same news on her X (formerly known as Twitter) account: “I just wanted to let everyone know that my father, Geoffrey, is doing well after a three-hour surgery to remove his throat cancer this evening. The surgeon claims things went well, but I haven’t seen him yet. I’m supposed to post an update, he asked,” she wrote.

It’s important to remember that Geoffrey Boycott played cricket from 1964 till 1982. He scored 8,114 runs, including 22 hundreds, in 108 Test matches for England.

When Boycott revealed on July 2 that his throat cancer had resurfaced, the whole cricket community was shocked. Boycott was reported by IndiaToday as stating, “It has now been confirmed I have throat cancer and will require an operation. In the last few weeks, I have had an MRI Scan, CT Scan, PET Scan, and two biopsies.”

“Based on my previous experience, I understand that in order to successfully treat cancer again, I will require top-notch medical care as well as a great deal of luck. Even in the event that the surgery is a success, cancer patients must always assume that their disease may return. Thus, I’ll simply go ahead and cross my fingers,” he continued.
