Sam Wells recently opted to leave, therefore Gavin Larsen was brought in to take over as selection manager for New Zealand. He oversaw Cricket Wellington as its CEO and served as Cricket Operations Manager prior to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. From 2015 to 2013, the Wellington native was appointed as the Kiwis’ selection manager.
Gavin Larsen took 24 and 113 wickets in eight Test matches and 121 One-Day Internationals between March 1990 and June 1999.
After serving as the Warwickshire County Cricket Club’s (WCCC) Performance Director, he returned to New Zealand and accepted a position as Commercial Manager for the Nelson Giants (basketball).
Gavin Larsen will now pick all New Zealand main team, New Zealand A, and New Zealand XI squads for home and away tours in close coordination with Head Coach Rob Walter.
“Re-entering the BLACKCAPS and the national high performance environment is an absolute honour for me,” Larsen said to New Zealand Cricket.
I have a strong interest in cricket in this nation, so it excites me to have another chance to play at the greatest level. He continued, “I’m eager to get started this summer and hopefully contribute to the BLACKCAPS’ ongoing success.”
The national selection manager is in charge of overseeing the selection procedures and coordinating with domestic scouts and Major Association coaches to stay informed about the domestic situation, according to NZC’s Chief High Performance Officer Daryl Gibson.
Gibson clarified that Gavin Larsen prior experience in the position and comprehension of its duties were important factors in his reappointment. But his zeal and enthusiasm also played a significant part.
“A major factor in Gavin Larsen appointment was his experience with the position and his comprehension of the criteria.
However, his enthusiasm and drive, as well as his will to return to the game and contribute to change, also pleased us,” Gibson said.
Starting on November 3, Larsen will assume leadership. When his tenure begins, New Zealand’s first assignment will be the multi-format home series against the West Indies. In addition to three ODIs and as many Test matches, the Kiwis will play the Caribbean team in a five-match T20I series.
