According to former Indian cricket player Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli is the greatest player in ODI history. In the opening ODI of the three-match series against South Africa in Ranchi on November 30, Kohli scored his 52nd ODI century.
Gavaskar praised the outstanding Indian batsman and asserted that the legend’s legacy in 50-over cricket is undeniably great.
“I don’t believe that’s in question. It’s not just me; I believe that everyone who has played against and with him concurs that he is the best in the one-day format. Gavaskar said on Star Sports, “Look, you score 52 hundreds, that actually puts you right up there in the stratosphere, so to speak.”
Gavaskar cheekily used Ricky Ponting’s earlier assessment of Kohli, pointing out how difficult it is to win over an Australian.
“I recently learnt that Ricky Ponting claims to be the greatest one-day cricket player he has ever seen. This means that an Australian captain will agree that receiving praise from an Australian is extremely uncommon. Extremely challenging. He went on to say, “I don’t think there is any argument for that if an Australian says that he was the best.”
In closing, Gavaskar noted that by hitting 52 in ODIs, surpassing Tendulkar’s Test record of 51, Kohli has also eclipsed Tendulkar’s record for most hundreds in a single format. He acknowledged that the two forms are entirely different, but he believed that Kohli and Tendulkar are on an equal basis.
“With 51 Hundreds, Sachin has been right up there.” “But you know where you stand when you pass the great Sachin Tendulkar,” Gavaskar remarked.
In the 50-over leg of the all-format series versus the Proteas, India took the lead with a slim victory of 17 runs.
