Gautam Gambhir Recalls India’s Whitewash vs New Zealand

"That will always be with me as a coach. I shouldn't forget that. I told the boys too, Gambhir said.

Gautam Gambhir Recalls India’s Whitewash vs New Zealand

India lost the ODI series to Sri Lanka 3-0, giving Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir a disappointing start to his international coaching career. The team recovered by defeating Bangladesh in both Tests and Twenty20 Internationals, but they were subsequently humiliated by New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home.

Gautam Gambhir acknowledged that the series loss is still fresh in his mind nearly a year after that devastating outcome. With their spinners doing the most damage, the visiting team thoroughly outperformed the Rohit Sharma-led team, the former India opener said. An incredibly forgotten event in Gautam Gambhir early coaching career, the loss was India’s first home series loss since 2012.

“In my coaching career, I doubt I’ll ever forget that. And I should remember that as well. I’ve also shared this with the sons. It’s critical to look ahead. However, there are instances when it’s also critical to keep the past in mind. Because you can begin to take things for granted if you forget the past. Nothing should ever be taken for granted. I had the impression that everyone believed we could topple them because of New Zealand. However, that is the truth.

And that’s the sport,” Gautam Gambhir stated in a conversation with Aakash Chopra on JioHotstar.

Although they won the first match of their trip of Australia later that year, the Indians ultimately lost the Test series. Soon after, though, they recovered well and won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Since then, Ravichandran Ashwin has said goodbye to international cricket, and senior mainstays Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired from red-ball cricket.

Shubman Gill has assumed leadership of the Test team in this new age, leading India to an unassailable 1-0 lead over the West Indies at home and a 2-2 draw against England in the five-match away series.

The team will want to keep up its momentum under Shubman Gill’s direction after their recent results have been encouraging. Since taking over as India’s head coach in July 2024, Gambhir has influenced the team’s evolution. He will remain in office until the 2027 ODI World Cup, which is slated for the latter part of that year. Gautam Gambhir had a great time leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third championship triumph in the IPL 2024 prior to taking on the post of national coach.
