Indian cricketer Varun Chakravarthy, who plays for the Kolkata Knight Riders, recently talked about how Gautam Gambhir’s support helped him gain confidence and finally return to the national league. In addition to serving as KKR’s trainer for the 2024 Indian Premier League, Gautam Gambhir has been India’s head coach since July 2024.
Chakravarthy also commented on the several ways that Gautam Gambhir unafraid style as a head coach and mentor benefited KKR and India.
“In a similar vein, Gautam Gambhir motivation has really aided me in my recovery. He has always given me confidence and assured me that “no matter who’s going to ignore you, I will keep you in my plans for now,” even if we don’t communicate much. That gave me a sense of confidence. Additionally, Chakravarthy was described by RevSportz as saying, “If you ask me about Gauti bhai as a mentor, I would say that he brings a warrior mindset in the dressing room, which is very important and has worked for us at KKR and in the Champions Trophy.”
Chakravarthy also discussed how Suryakumar Yadav is a “bowler’s delight” and how, as a skipper, he is comparable to Rohit Sharma.
“It makes no difference if you win or lose; you give it your all. Furthermore, based on my observations, Surya is a lot like Rohit Sharma. He has excellent tactical sense, and perhaps his stint at MI has exposed him to some excellent commanders. He never puts pressure on the bowlers and is a very good man. “Having a captain like him would be a bowler’s dream,” he continued.
After playing six Twenty20 Internationals for India in 2021, Chakravarthy was benched. In 2024, he returned to India’s T20I lineup and did a respectable job. Chakravarthy played three of his four One-Day Internationals during the Men in Blue’s Champions Trophy 2025 championship run.
With the exception of 2019, Chakravarthy has played for KKR in every season of the Indian Premier League. In 83 games for the three-time champions, he has taken 99 wickets.
