Gautam Gambhir can manage the Indian squad, but he is most definitely not a coach, according to 1983 World Cup captain Kapil Dev. Following the Men in Blue’s 0-2 home Test series defeat by South Africa last month, the former India opener has been the target of intense criticism. Test series losses to Australia, New Zealand, and now the Proteas have raised questions about Gambhir’s coaching tenure with the Indian squad.
The word ‘coach’ is frequently misinterpreted in modern cricket, Kapil said. The renowned cricket player claims that young players receive tutoring. They already have distinct skill sets before they enter the global arena, though, so the conventional notion of teaching is impractical.
“The word ‘coach’ is a very prevalent one these days. He may serve as the team’s manager. Coach is where I learn in school and college, if you will. My coach was there, and those were the folks. Speaking at the Indian Chamber of Commerce ICC Centenary Session, Kapil declared, “They can handle me.”
Gautam Gambhir is incapable of coaching.
“How can you be a coach when someone has been called a leg spinner, for example? How is Gautam able to coach a wicketkeeper or a leg spinner? You must manage, in my opinion. That’s more crucial. The Haryana Hurricane said, “As a manager, you encourage them to say you can do it because the young boys look up to you when you become a manager.”
According to Kapil, a captain’s or coach-turned-player’s main responsibility is to reassure a player who is having trouble with their form.
It is the manager’s and captain’s responsibility to reassure the team and always tell them that they can do better. How can they do that for me? That’s how I see it,” he stated.
I wouldn’t want to have dinner and a drink with someone who made a hundred: Kapil Dev
Kapil added that rather than spending time with a player who is performing well, a coach ought to spend more time with someone who is struggling.
“I believe that those who are not performing well need to be consoled. I wouldn’t want to go out to eat and drink with someone who made a hundred. There are a lot of people there. In my capacity as captain, I enjoy having dinner or drinks with folks who aren’t performing,” Kapil remarked.
“That’s what happens when you give them the confidence they need.” Therefore, I believe it’s crucial for a captain to put the squad together in addition to doing well,” he said.
