In front of head coach Gautam Gambhir prior to India’s opening One-Day International match against South Africa, a supporter at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi vented his fury. The recent 2-0 thumping of India by South Africa in the two-match series significantly damaged their home Test record.
A fan shouted that Gambhir should no longer coach the Indian team and that he should not think of India as the favourites for the 2027 World Cup while he and another member of the Indian team were jogging routinely during one of the practice sessions before the first ODI in Ranchi.

“3-0 ghar mein [in 2024 against New Zealand]. Saamne [South] Africa 1-0 [2-0]. Chhod do coaching. The fan shouted from the stands, “South Africa ke saamne ghar mein nahi jeet sakte, 2027 ka World Cup bhool jao.”
The primary cause for concern has been India’s performance in red-ball cricket, despite the fact that Gambhir has won the Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy during his tenure this year.
