After an 11-year break, Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated the five-time champion Mumbai Indians (MI) by five wickets in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to go to their first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) final. After 18 years of play, one of these two teams will finally take the coveted IPL trophy on June 3 when PBKS and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) square off in a thrilling final match.
With seasoned opener Rohit Sharma leaving early, MI, who were assigned to bat first, suffered an early setback. However, Jonny Bairstow maintained his stellar play from the previous game, scoring a scorching 38 off 24 balls before being removed by Vijaykumar Vyshak in the opening over following the conclusion of the powerplay.
The innings was then steadied by a 72-run partnership off 42 deliveries from Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. MI had a healthy run rate thanks to the 44 runs each of the two batters contributed. Naman Dhir made a brilliant cameo in the final overs, hitting 37 off 18 balls to help the Hardik Pandya-led squad reach 203/6 in their 20 overs.
As a result, PBKS got off to a rough start after losing Prabhsimran Singh early. However, with a knock of 20 runs before falling, Priyansh Arya showed some promise. After that, Josh Inglis faced Jasprit Bumrah and scored 38 runs off of just 21 balls after hammering 20 runs in one over.
Then, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer took the lead by putting up an incredible 84-run partnership with Nehal Wadhera in just 47 balls. Before being removed, the left-handed batsman contributed a crucial 48 off 29 balls, but Iyer made sure their team won without any problems.
With five wickets remaining, he led PBKS home with a spectacular unbeaten 87 off 41 balls, which included eight sixes and five fours. He demonstrated incredible power striking. Iyer, of course, won Player of the Match for his incredible performance at Motera with his maruading blade.
A new IPL champion will be crowned following the match between PBKS and RCB in the IPL 2025 Final.
