In the first innings of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match No. 13 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, April 1, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) overcame a shaky start against Punjab Kings (PBKS) to finish on 171/7.
In the first over itself, Lucknow lost the wicket of the highly effective Mitchell Marsh after being put in to bat first by Shreyas Iyer. The visitors’ first blood was drawn by Arshdeep Singh. After hitting a string of boundaries, fellow opener Aiden Markram was removed by Lockie Ferguson in the fourth over. In the penultimate over of the powerplay, LSG captain Rishabh Pant was removed by an innocent delivery from Glenn Maxwell, demonstrating his continued failure at the bat.
LSG was having trouble at 35/3. To calm the ship, though, Ayush Badoni teamed up with Nicholas Pooran, and the two of them stitched a 54-run partnership in 40 balls. Their position was broken by Yuzvendra Chahal, who dismissed the dangerous Pooran for forty-four (30).
Before David Miller was removed by Marco Jansen, Badoni and Miller had another significant 30-run collaboration. At number seven, Abdul Samad came out to bat and scorched his way to a 27 off just 12 balls, smashing two fours and as many sixes. At the end of the inning, he provided LSG with the momentum they needed. Samad and Badoni, who scored 41 off 33 balls, were both removed in the final over.
On a surface that appears to be difficult for the hitters, the hosts ultimately concluded with a respectable score. It is by no means unplayable, though, and if batters are prepared to put in the effort at the crease, they can score runs.
Arshdeep, who finished with figures of 3/43 in his four overs, stated that the seamers had assistance on the surface following the first innings. In addition, he described his bowling strategy for the Punjab hitters.
“I mean, that was a pretty mediocre bowling performance on a wicket that was aiding seam bowlers.” We could have hit the lengths more during the powerplay, but it was halting a little and moving. Since the hitters these days swing hard and don’t trust their defence very much, I had two slips and deep cover in case he swings and gains an advantage. In between innings, Arshdeep stated, “I think it’s a good total; we have to bat well to chase it down.”
