Reports: Twist in retention rules as Franchises can use INR 75 crore cap as they wish

The clubs’ retention policy has been the subject of multiple talks and rule modifications before to the IPL 2025 auction. Ahead to the auction, the BCCI declared that the initial retention fee for each franchise would be INR 18 crore.

But after rumours surfaced that Sunrisers Hyderabad had retained Heinrich Klaasen for INR 23 crore, there appears to be a twist in the story. Over the slab limit, the sum would be INR 5 crore. According to the reports, if a team retains five players, they can keep them for more than the stipulated period as long as the total number of players is equal to or less than INR 75 crore in retained purse.

Retention rules state that an IPL team can keep their first-capped player for INR 18 crore, their second-capped player for INR 14 crore, their third-capped player for INR 11 crore, their fourth for INR 18 crore, their fifth for INR 14 crore, and their uncapped Indian for INR 4 crore. A franchise, however, is reportedly free to allocate that money anyway they see fit.

“Retention deduction of the total amount rather than the fee per player, in this case 75 Crs, regardless of how much is paid to five players.

” If the sum over 75 Crs, the actual amount will be subtracted. According to the rule, if the sum is less than 75 Crs, 75 Crs must be subtracted.

Notably, the designated amount will still be subtracted even if a team spends less than INR 75 crore to keep its five designated players. But the franchises might benefit greatly from having the freedom to spend the money on the players they have kept.
