The Indian Premier League (IPL) team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has already let go of previous director of cricket Mike Hesson. Notably, Hesson has been named head coach of Islamabad United, a Pakistan Super League (PSL) team that has won two championships. It’s crucial to remember that Azhar Mahmood held the role prior to the recently revealed Hesson.
Hesson envisaged working at RCB for four years. But he was let go of the role earlier in August.
Prior to this, the 49-year-old had experience coaching international teams in Kenya and New Zealand. Then, shortly before the 2019 Indian Premier League season, he joined RCB as director of cricket operations. Throughout his four years with the Bengaluru-based team, the team experienced little success as its trophy drought—which dates back to the league’s founding—persisted.
Mike Hesson took the stage to express his sentiments on his arrival at Islamabad United.
He expressed his happiness at being a member of the PSL team. The franchise’s professional, contemporary, and dimagh se (mindful) approach really speaks to me. United’s approach, which is based on the 4 Es (Excellence, Empowerment, Education, and Environment), is equally impressive. Mike Hesson was cited by ESPNCricinfo as stating, “I look forward to working with the talented players and staff to build a successful team and deliver exciting cricket to the fans.”
Upon Mike Hesson appointment as head coach of Islamabad United, owner Ali Naqvi stated, “Mike is very strategic and analytical on his approach, has proven skills of creating new and modern ways of playing—something his NZ stint demonstrates—and is a great people manager.”
It is important to note that the main T20 tournament in Pakistan is set to start two months into 2024 and run for approximately six weeks.
