IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: A former cricket player from India retires from providing commentary

Recently, during the second Test match between India and England, Sunil Gavaskar, a former cricket icon, was forced to resign from his role as commentator in Visakhapatnam. His mother-in-law’s death was the cause of this unannounced departure.

Famous in Indian cricket, Gavaskar took off for Kanpur on Friday afternoon to be with his wife, Marshneil Gavaskar, and the bereaved family.

This terrible incident changed Gavaskar’s plans and threw a shadow over the cricketing environment on the first day of the Test match. After retiring, the 74-year-old, who participated in 125 Test matches and amassed over 10,000 runs, moved easily into a number of administrative positions in cricket. One of his many accomplishments was serving as the BCCI’s acting president, which demonstrated his unwavering dedication to the game.

Gavaskar has suffered personal losses while on a cricket assignment before. His mother, Meena Gavaskar, passed away in 2022 from age-related complications. The 95-year-old respected person had a big part in helping the cricket virtuoso grow.

After taking part in the first test in Hyderabad, renowned analyst and commentator Gavaskar only returned to his role as narrator for the second test in Visakhapatnam. The cricketing community has offered condolences and empathy to the cricketing legend, acknowledging that life may be unpredictable.

As the cricketing world sends its best wishes for strength to Gavaskar and his family during this trying period, the Test match in Visakhapatnam goes on. India is playing England after winning the toss in an attempt to recover from their defeat in the first Test match.

With Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravichandran Ashwin at the crease, batting at 179 and five not out, respectively, India had so far amassed 336 for six at Stumps on Day 1. In his remarkable knock thus far, Jaiswal has struck 17 fours and five sixes. When play continues on Day 2, he will be keen to turn this into a double ton.
