For the fourth time in a row, Shammi Silva has been chosen President of Sri Lanka Cricket. Since there was no opposition, Silva and his group won the elections without a fight. They will hold power from 2025 to 2027, a two-year span. Shammi Silva has demonstrated his supremacy for the third consecutive occasion by avoiding competition.
Ravin Wickramaratne and Jayantha Dharmadasa have kept their vice presidential positions in other important roles. Similarly, Sujeewa Godaliyadda will remain treasurer, with Lasantha Wickremasinghe serving as Sujeewa’s assistant treasurer and Chryshantha Kapuwatte as assistant secretary. The new team will only have one member missing from the old one.
The team will no longer include Mohan De Silva, who resigned as Secretary in November 2023. The lone new member of the committee, Bandula Dissanayake, will take his post. Kapuwatte was serving as the Secretary while Mohan was away. A significant constitutional modification has enabled the creation of a new squad.
The supremacy of Shammi Silva as SLC President
A recent amendment to SLC’s constitution permits officials to serve four consecutive two-year terms. As Silva’s third term came to a conclusion, it was changed. Silva will have served as SLC President for eight years by the end of his new term in 2027.
The decrease in the number of voting bodies was one of the main effects of the rule modification. The body, which had 147 members at first, was whittled down to 60 members. The first election to take place under the new regulations was that of Shammi Silva.
The supremacy of Shammi Silva and company in Sri Lankan cricket has been demonstrated by the most recent elections. Silva first took office as SLC President in 2017 and served in that capacity until 2019. He has since been elected to every term as president. In some places, it has also sparked worries about the SLC’s power concentration.
