The maiden Twenty20 International (T20I) between the women of India and South Africa resumed their multi-format series on Friday, July 5 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai.
Even though the women from India were playing exceptionally well, South Africa took the day, winning for the first time in the series.
With star player Richa Ghosh suffering a concussion on the pitch, it was definitely a day to forget for the hosts. Due to the injury, the young player was unable to participate in the game; S. Sajana took her position on the pitch.
According to a BCCI statement, Ghosh had “neck pain and dizziness” while playing in her 50th Twenty20 international after attempting a catch in the 16th over of the opening innings. Tazmin Brits of South Africa gained an upper hand, and as the ball reached Ghosh, she leaped high in an attempt to catch it.
But the ball bounced off her gloves and struck her in the face. She went straight off the pitch to get the physiotherapist’s assistance. Uma Chetry replaced Ghosh in the first innings in order to preserve wickets. Nevertheless, Sajana was declared the official replacement for concussions during the innings change.
It’s also important to note that Tazmin Brits of South Africa was hurt; during the second innings, she needed to be helped off the pitch due to a contusion in her right leg. What initially appeared to be a cramp turned out to be something significant.
With 81 runs in 56 pitches during the first inning, the British had an outstanding game. Against India, she batted for ninety-two minutes in the first innings, and even though the odds seemed to be in her favour, she helped her side win handily. Masabata Klaas was named by South Africa as her replacement for the remainder of the match due to her injury. India and South Africa women will concentrate on the next match after winning the first Twenty20 International. On July 7, the second Twenty20 International will also take place in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk.
