Ten people are arrested after fighting breaks out at the Champions Trophy victory rally in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.

After supporters began celebrating India’s Champions Trophy victory by blowing off firecrackers outside a mosque on Sunday, March 9, at least four people were hurt in the battle in Dr. Ambedkar Nagar, in the Madhya Pradesh town of Mhow, officials said.

India won the trophy for the second time in a row after defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the Dubai final. However, the festivities at Dr. Ambedkar Nagar, formerly known as Mhow, descended into violence and brutality, with both sides beginning to throw stones at one another. Numerous cars, stores, and motorbikes were damaged and burned. Notably, the town is almost 200 km away from the state capital, Bhopal.

According to The Hindu, senior police officer Hitika Vasal told reporters, “There was a disagreement between both sides after some people lit firecrackers outside the masjid (mosque) during some processions that were being taken out.”

According to local media, police used tear gas shells as a last resort to keep the situation under control. The scenario’s video showed burnt cars, broken glass on the roads, and deserted streets with a large and significant police presence. Shops displayed evidence of destruction, with damaged windows and other damage clearly visible.

Senior police officer Nimish Agrawal said, “The situation is currently under control,” and that in order to stop the situation from getting worse, more police patrols had been put in place in high-risk areas.

In India, a Hindu-majority country with the third-largest Muslim population in the world, cricket celebrations have occasionally resulted in unrest and strife. Following India’s victory over Pakistan in the same tournament, fans threw themselves at one another during celebrations the previous month, forcing Maharashtra police to intervene with force. To keep Dr. Ambedkar Nagar peaceful, authorities are still keeping an eye on the situation.

As India lifts its second Champions Trophy after a long 12-year wait, Hyderabad is also seen to burst with joy. Following the historic triumph, fans went crazy, as evidenced by a video uploaded by a fan on Twitter.

In addition to the southern city, a few other prestigious towns, including Pune and Bhopal, also commemorated Team India’s historic triumph, but they did so without creating any disturbances or instances of communal unrest.
