There will be several youthful and promising players from both teams in the three-match ODI series between hosts England (ENG) and the West Indies (WI). The ODI rankings of the teams entering the 2027 ODI World Cup may also be impacted by this series.
Over the last two years, both sides have had a dismal run in the 50-over format. Despite winning their last two ODI series, the Caribbean powerhouses have continued to play erratic cricket. The island nation missed out on both this season’s Champions Trophy and the 2023 ODI World Cup. The two-time world champions missed out on qualifying for both of these important international competitions for the first time.
The England team may have established a niche for itself in Test cricket and done fairly well in Twenty20 Internationals, but their ODI team is not in the same league. In addition to losing their last three ODI series, the English team has lost their last two ICC competitions. The Three Lions had a terrible run in the Champions Trophy and missed out on the World Cup playoffs. As a result of these performances, Jos Buttler resigned as England’s white-ball captain, and Harry Brook took his position.
Why is qualifying for the World Cup at stake for England and the West Indies?
With 2,615 points and an 84 rating, England is now ranked ninth in the ICC ODI rankings. The rankings of both teams provide the whole picture. With 2,347 points and an 81 rating, the West Indies are in ninth place, not far behind. Both teams will need to win this series because the top eight teams automatically go to the World Cup.

The team that places ninth before the deadline will have to compete in the tournament qualifiers. Since only the top two teams from the qualifiers will earn a place in the global championship, there is a chance that you will miss out on one of the sport’s most important international tournaments.
