In order to prepare for the day-night Ashes Test in Brisbane, an England XI will play the Prime Minister’s XI in a two-day pink-ball match at Canberra’s Manuka Oval on November 29 and 30. After the first Test in Perth and before the second Test in Brisbane, the match will take place in between the first two Tests of the series.
The PM’s XI match, which was previously a one-day event, changed to a multi-day format in the 2022–2023 season when the opposition was the West Indies. A two-day match against India was originally planned for last year, but due to heavy rain, it was only played for one day. Nevertheless, Sam Konstas’ century won him a Test call-up for the MCG, and the match had important ramifications.
The day-night Test this season will be played in Brisbane rather than Adelaide Oval, which makes the pink-ball encounter in Canberra even more important for England’s adaptation to playing in the dark.
After the series starts, England’s sole match outside of the five Ashes Tests will be the PM’s XI encounter.
At Lilac Hill in Perth, England will play the England Lions in a three-day warm-up match prior to the Perth Test. It is anticipated that the practice will focus more on center-wicket tactics than a full match.
There is more leeway in team selection because the PM’s XI fixture does not conflict with the Sheffield Shield, unlike the England Lions’ matches against a Cricket Australia XI and Australia A, which take place during the first two Ashes Tests. Tickets for the opening day have already sold out, according to Cricket.com.au.
“Every cricket enthusiast eagerly awaits an Ashes series. According to ESPNcricinfo, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated, “Like many Australians, I grew up admiring, and reluctance to acknowledge, the brilliance of players like Ian Botham, David Gower, and Graham Gooch.”
“I look forward to meeting with the selectors to finalise a PM’s XI squad that showcases the best available talent from across Australia to take on the strong English team,” he stated.
